So, you’ve got the travel bug… but your bank account is giving you the side-eye?
Girl, I get it. Vacations aren’t exactly getting cheaper these days. But here’s the thing — you can totally take that dream trip without selling a kidney. All thanks to something called home exchange.

If you’ve ever watched The Holiday with Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet (and maybe secretly hoped Jude Law would just casually stroll into your kitchen), then you already know the vibe. You swap your home with someone else’s, and voilà — you’re living like a local in your dream destination.

What exactly is a home exchange?

It’s pretty simple. You stay in someone’s home while they stay in yours. This can be at the same time (most common, since… you know… most of us only have one house), or at different times if your schedules don’t match. It works for families, couples, or even solo travelers.

Why it’s seriously worth considering

Sure, there are a million ways to vacation, but here’s why a home exchange is a total game-changer:

  • save big on accommodations — no hotels, no pricey Airbnbs, no resort fees. You’re only covering your travel costs (flight, train, gas… whatever gets you there).
  • your own kitchen — which means you can skip overpriced tourist restaurants every night and whip up your favorite meals instead. (Plus, kids = snacks every 5 minutes, so having a fridge? Heaven.)
  • live like a local — you’re not surrounded by tourists 24/7. You’re actually in a neighborhood, chatting with locals, and experiencing real life there.
  • comforts of home — think Wi-Fi, a washer/dryer (so you can pack lighter), TV, and all the little luxuries you’re used to.
  • your house isn’t sitting empty — less worry about break-ins when someone’s actually living there.
  • insider tips from your swap buddy — they’ll tell you where the good coffee is, the best local restaurants, and maybe even a hidden beach or two.
  • unexpected adventures — you might end up in a place you’d never even thought to visit… and love it.

But… what about the risks?

Let’s be real — it’s a little weird at first to have strangers in your home. If the thought of someone touching your coffee mug makes you twitch, this might not be your thing.

Other concerns:

  • You can’t control what they do in your home (but hey, they can’t control you in theirs either).
  • You might not know exactly what to expect until you get there, though most people have reviews and references.
  • The membership isn’t free or even cheap — $235 USD a year (updated price for 2025).

But here’s the flip side:

  • You’ll have lots of communication before the swap, so you’ll know the person pretty well by the time it happens.
  • The whole system runs on mutual trust. You treat their place like you want yours treated — and they’ll do the same.
  • The membership fee actually weeds out the “just browsing” crowd and leaves you with serious swappers.

And if the thought of cooking or cleaning while you’re away makes you groan? That’s fine. Book yourself into an all-inclusive resort and live your best poolside life. This is about finding what works for you.

Where to sign up

The most popular (and my personal favorite) is HomeExchange. You set up a profile with info and photos of your home, share some details about your neighborhood, and make it sound as inviting as possible (without… you know… turning it into a fairytale). People can leave reviews after the exchange, so honesty really is the best policy.

How it works

Once you’re in, you can browse homes all over the world. Search by country, region, or even a specific city. When you spot a home that makes your heart skip a beat, send the owner a friendly message about when you want to travel and what you have to offer.

If they’re interested, you’ll keep chatting to iron out the details. Eventually, you’ll confirm the swap and pack your bags.

Simultaneous swaps are free, but if you want to do a one-way stay, you’ll use GuestPoints — which you earn by filling out your profile, hosting guests, or referring friends.

My own home exchange adventures

I’ve done two exchanges in the past — and both were amazing.

2007: London

I swapped with an older professor who stayed at my place while I stayed in his gorgeous apartment overlooking a marina and the Tower Bridge. We’d grab groceries from the store across the street, have breakfast on the balcony in the sun, and chat with neighbors like we’d lived there for years.

Màlaga uitzicht

2010: Málaga, Spain

Three whole weeks in a 4-bedroom apartment, 100 meters from the beach, with a shared pool and a palm-tree-filled park right outside. My brother even came to stay for a week. It was the ultimate summer escape. I could get used to this life!

Both trips were affordable, comfortable, and gave me memories I’d never get from a standard hotel stay.

Bonus points if you sign up through me

If you sign up for HomeExchange through my link and use the code charissa-b34d6, you’ll get extra GuestPoints to help you book your first swap faster. I get some too, so it’s a win-win.

So… what do you say? Ready to swap your way into your next dream vacation?
